The Lodge, Loosened Up

Lodge usually means dark, heavy and serious. This goes the other way. Max Humphrey, the Portland, Oregon interior designer and author, has spent years designing rooms people never want to leave. Max Humphrey for Paseo Road is his first bedding collection, and it brings that feeling to the bed.

Camping toile, oversized plaid, oak leaves and folk florals, in wide-wale corduroy, sweater knits and reversible quilting. The prints carry a little rugged and a little soft at the same time, so the bed reads collected instead of themed. Everything is made to be mixed, not matched.

If you have seen every plaid-and-antler bed, this is the one that feels new. And if you would never call your house a lodge, it works just as well.

Camping Toile

Canoes and paddlers, a fisherman working the shallows, log cabins, pines and an elk at the treeline, drawn in the old narrative style and printed in full color on deep navy. Classic toile is one ink on cream. This one is canoe country.

Pacific Plaid

Scaled up so it reads from the doorway, with light blue wide-wale corduroy shams. Fold the top layer back and the bed goes from plaid to sky blue.

Oak Leaf

The print that plays best with the others. Shown under the olive quilt with the deer throw, it takes the plaid or the toile just as easily.

Folk Floral

The feminine side of the mix, on a denim-blue ground that keeps it from going sweet. Put it next to the plaid or the toile and both get better.

The Layers

Made to Be Mixed

Duvet covers and shams, quilts, accent pillows in corduroy and velvet, and sweater-knit throws in the shape of a hide. The pieces that pull one bed into the next.

The Designer

About Max Humphrey

Max Humphrey is a Portland, Oregon interior designer and author known for a lived-in take on modern Americana. Before design he worked in film and television production and toured as a bassist in a punk band, and both show in how he puts a room together: layered, a little loud and never precious.

His books include Modern Americana and Lodge: An Indoorsy Tour of America’s National Parks. Max Humphrey for Paseo Road is his first bedding collection.
